Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life’s most emotional and beautiful seasons — and it all passes by so quickly. Those tiny fingers, sleepy cuddles and quiet moments at home change before you even realise they’re gone. One of the most common questions I’m asked as a newborn photographer in Coffs Harbour is when the best time is to book and photograph your baby.

If you’re expecting and thinking about newborn photography on the Coffs Coast, here’s everything you need to know.

Best Age for Newborn Photos

The ideal time for newborn photography is usually within the first 2 weeks after birth, ideally between 5–14 days old.

During this stage, babies are often sleepier, curl naturally into those cosy newborn poses and are still in that beautiful early “newborn bubble” stage. These first days also allow us to capture all the tiny details that change so quickly — flaky skin, tiny toes, milk-drunk cuddles and the way they fit perfectly in your arms.

That being said, there’s absolutely no pressure if your baby is older. Beautiful, meaningful newborn photographs can still be created well beyond those first two weeks.

Why Booking Early Helps

I always recommend booking your newborn photography session during pregnancy — ideally in your second or early third trimester.

Because babies arrive on their own timeline, sessions are booked around your due date rather than a fixed day. Booking ahead ensures availability around your baby’s arrival while also allowing everything to feel calm and organised once your little one is here.

Early booking also gives us time to:

plan your session

choose between in-home or outdoor photography

discuss styling and outfit guidance

prepare for a relaxed experience without rushing

Many families also choose to book both maternity and newborn photography together to beautifully document the journey into parenthood.

Lifestyle Newborn Sessions Explained

My approach to newborn photography is natural, relaxed and connection-focused.

Rather than heavily posed studio setups, lifestyle newborn photography captures your family more honestly and gently — cuddles on the couch, feeding moments, tiny stretches, siblings snuggling close and all the quiet moments in between.

Sessions are baby-led and calm, allowing plenty of time for feeding, settling and simply slowing down together.

The goal is never perfection. It’s about preserving the feeling of this season exactly as it was.

Including Siblings in Your Session

Older siblings are always welcome during newborn sessions and often become such an important part of your gallery.

There’s no expectation for young children to sit perfectly still or smile constantly. Some of the most beautiful moments happen naturally — little hands reaching for baby, cuddles on the bed, quiet curiosity and playful interactions.

The session is designed to feel relaxed for the entire family.

Preparing Your Home for an In-Home Session

One of the biggest worries parents have before an in-home newborn session is whether their home is “photo ready.”

The truth is — it doesn’t need to be perfect.

Natural light and connection matter far more than having a spotless home. We usually use spaces with the best light, such as the master bedroom, nursery or living room, while keeping everything calm and simple.

There’s no pressure for perfection. Your home is already meaningful because it’s where your family’s story is unfolding.

What If Baby Arrives Early?

That’s completely okay — flexibility is built into newborn photography scheduling.

Once your baby arrives, we simply adjust your session date depending on how everyone is feeling. Whether your little one arrives early, late or right on time, we’ll work together to find the best timing for your family.

The most important thing is creating a calm, supportive experience during those early newborn days.

A Relaxed Newborn Photography Experience

Newborn sessions are designed to feel slow, calm and completely centred around your baby. There’s no pressure for perfection, no expectations for your home to look a certain way, and no need to worry if baby needs feeding, cuddles or settling throughout the session.

The focus is simply on documenting this season honestly — the connection, the tiny details, and the love that already exists within your family.

Newborn photography sessions are available across Coffs Harbour, Woolgoolga and the surrounding Coffs Coast. If you’re expecting and thinking about booking your newborn photography session, I’d love to help you preserve this chapter in a way that feels natural, meaningful and true to your family.
